Social Hub Office Block, Part 1
NELSON MANDELA DEVELOPMENT CORRIDOR, SOCIAL HUB OFFICE BLOCK
Arcadia
2006
2006
Next to the apies river lies a seemingly calm office block. It becomes an edge on the street, with a setback and an overhanging restaurant indicating the entrance to the social square. Retail spaces form the base for most of the higher levels. The eating block is a vertical element, providing views to the river and the square. It connects the building with all social activities in the hub. A small, private courtyard is placed in the centre. Residential blocks, geometric in form but irregular in arrangement, intersect the corporate blocks. They are split open to provide areas for the housing elements. A new way of ordering is achieved in the disorder.

SHIFT Housing Competition - part 1
SHIFT HOUSING COMPETITION
Marabastad
2006
A small town is created in the city. Retail spaces act as a barrier, giving privacy to those behind. The buildings create smaller, different spaces in between, filled with trees, grass, paving, cars and, most importantly, people. A skew building provides excitement, with a different covering, indicating north. Spaces differ – from the large to the small, from the busy to the calm. Small changes in building form become points of interest.

Landscape and building become one. The earth’s plane lifts up in three parts, reflecting the city grid, while underneath this the qibla gives rise to a grid system. The space leads down into the ground, just as muslims return to the earth with death. Linear atriums point towards mecca. Glass cages start on qibla and end being bent into the city grid.

An old, semi-used building is broken up and cut open. Timber portals are extracted towards the approach. Openings reveal a restaurant, extruded even beyond the remaining building. Exhibitions of instruments lead to a theatre. Behind this exhibition is the hidden dressing rooms.
blocks of ablutions and offices also extrude from the interior. The apex of the building is a concrete floor/wall/roof that encloses the theatre.

The traditional grid windowed library’s form is deconstructed. Planes pull out and cut in to become an entrance, extra book space, a coffee shop and even roofs. A glass facade links all that is within with nearby spaces or buildings. The roof floats on and below thin elements. Natural stone protects the offices from the western sun.

Nestled into a small hill the house becomes spaces between lines of views. The high mass building is intersected by a line of water, becoming the pool. When one enters, a photographic studio is on one’s right and the house’s social spaces on one’s left. Sleeping occurs on the next floor and also in a small outbuilding which is only just another line. The broken roof lets in light and folds here and there to become walls. More lines continue outside becoming social areas.

Designed for the famous sculptor this building is living and working combined. As in his work, there is procession as the spectator moves through the site. People pass huge spaces filled with art. It culminates into the workshop, also large, which in turn leads to private areas. The house is on top, because all that happens underneath came from here. The roofs lead the eye and reinterprets the surrounding buildings.

Typical suburban context

With this house everything is connected by lines. The main ordering lines radiate from one point. Secondary ordering lines are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the first radiating line. Interior planters and large windows blur the line between inside and outside. Setbacks provide roof overhangs for shading. The kitchen opens up onto the outside living area, creating a strong link between these two spaces. The height of the top spaces indicates their importance.
